The Ax4 crew nears the completion of their mission: final experiments, education, and preparations for return.

Day 17 11 July: additional time in space and final experiments

Friday, 11 July, was already the 17th day of the Ax‑4 mission and at the same time the 15th day of operational work for the crew aboard the International Space Station. The additional days in space allowed for the completion of research and the undertaking of additional scientific and educational tasks.

  • Sławosz Uznański‑Wiśniewski began the day working on the Immune Multiomics experiment, which involved collecting blood in specially prepared tubes designed for working in microgravity. He also participated in EEG Neurofeedback, Mxene in LEO, Human Gut Microbiota, as well as psychophysiological experiments such as Muscular Stimulation, Microbiome Profiling, Voyager Displays and Voice in Space.

  • It is worth noting that thanks to the extended stay, Sławosz also attempted to photograph Poland from orbit—the time window for this long-awaited moment will open once more on 13 July.

  • The remaining crew members carried out their projects: Shubhanshu Shukla studied microalgae and conducted experiments on visual‑motor perception (Voyager Displays), Peggy Whitson coordinated the activities of the entire crew, and Tibor Kapu tested motion sensors as part of the IMU‑DRS project.

At the end of the day, the crew gave a joint interview for CNN International, which will be broadcast on 14 July at 22:00 Polish time.

Day 18 12 July: penultimate day on the ISS

Saturday, 12 July, was the penultimate full day of the Ax-4 mission on the ISS. The team focused on finalising experiments and transmitting data back to Earth.

  • Sławosz Uznański achieved an impressive 99.2% completion of the goals of the Polish part of the mission, finishing, among others, the AstroMentalHealth experiments and subsequent EEG Neurofeedback sessions. He participated in the data transfer from ESA projects: Bone Health and Sleep in Orbit, which will provide insights into the impact of microgravity on the skeletal system and sleep.

  • A significant part of the day also involved preparing educational materials for the Astro Pi project, which allows students across Europe to programme devices operating on the ISS.

  • Sławosz took additional shots promoting the mission from inside the Cupola module, and in the evening, he had the last chance to photograph Poland from orbit — the best conditions for this were scheduled for 12 July between 20:21 and 20:31 Polish time.

  • The entire crew was also finalising experiments related to mental health, glucose and insulin (Suite Ride), perception (ENPERCHAR), VR tests (Neuromotion VR), as well as studies on materials in space conditions (Suit Fabric Study).
