Mission IGNIS
The most interesting moments of the first week of the Ax‑4 / IGNIS mission
8 Jul 2025

Poland has returned to space, and the Ax-4 crew has been conducting ambitious research and educating the next generations on Earth since the very first days.
The first week of the Axiom Mission 4, involving Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański, featured an intense schedule of scientific experiments and educational activities. Here is a detailed summary of the days from the launch until the end of June 2025.
25 June — Launch of the mission from Florida
The launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, with a majestic plume of fire and applause from assembled families and representatives of ESA, POLSA, and MRiT, was exceptional: for the first time since 1978, a Polish astronaut went into orbit. Sławosz Uznański, waving to the cameras just before entering the Dragon, emphasized that "it is a great day not only for him but for Polish science."
26 June — Arrival at ISS and first experiments
After opening the hatch on the ISS, the crew greeted Expedition 73 — in a smiling photo, Sławosz Uznański is seen shaking hands with the ISS commander. On the same day, the crew installed the first Polish experiments. It is symbolic that Space Volcanic Algae and the Leopard ISS platform began operating exactly on the day of docking — showcasing the efficiency of the Polish scientific team's preparations.
27 June — Configuration of key research
It is worth noting that on the very first full day of work, the crew prepared the stations for three key biomedical experiments, including Immune Multiomics and Human Gut Microbiota. Sławosz Uznański mentioned during the broadcast that preparing such delicate samples in the tight conditions of the station was "like surgery in gloves."
28 June — Commencement of mental health research
On this day, the crew undertook the first session of the AstroMentalHealth experiment — two-person psychometric tests in a closed module aimed to assess the astronauts' psychological resilience to long-term isolation. In a conversation with POLSA, Sławosz joked that "he faces questions he didn’t even know during ESA recruitment."
29 June — View from the Cupola and data for schools
One of the most media-capable moments of the week was the Earth photo session from the Cupola, the results of which were sent to Polish schools as part of the "Lessons from Space." In a live broadcast, the astronaut showed children Central Europe as seen from the ISS, pointing out a brightly lit Poland.
30 June — Preparations for brain research
The crew prepared the EEG set for neurofeedback studies — the first-ever ESA study of brain activity conducted in this form. The process required precise electrode placement and calibration, which posed an additional challenge in microgravity.
